Some individuals just seem to “get it” when it comes to shooting surf. Joseph Allison is one of those people. Joseph is still relatively underground in the Canadain surf scene, but his imagery holds it’s own even amongst the greats. We would like to take this opportunity to formally introduce you to Joseph Allison.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, where are you from, how long have you been shooting?
I grew up, and am still living, on the south shore of Nova Scotia. Honestly, I couldn’t really tell you how long I’ve been shooting. I remember way back when I was about 10 or 11 years old…buying disposable cameras to take photos of my friends riding bikes! I have just recently started taking it somewhat seriously – within the last year or so.
Influences, who or what got you into photography?
It’s really just something that evolved over time. It started by using disposable cameras at a young age. Then when I started taking biking seriously, I remember knowing exactly what I wanted for photos of myself. I remember trying to explain to friends how to take the photos I was envisioning; And then slowly turned into me taking photos of them instead!
What other interest do you have outside photography?
Anything to do with being outside! I love getting out and riding mountain bikes, and more recently road biking. My wife’s family is pretty big into drag racing, so we spend a lot of time there. And of course, every once in a blue moon, it’s nice to actually catch a wave or two myself!
What’s next? Ideally, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Do you have any big plans?
I’m really not sure what’s next. Honestly, I just want to keep getting better. I still feel like every time I get out I’m figuring out more about myself and my photography. The photos I took last year – I look back at and realize they aren’t nearly as good as I thought at that time. So really I just want to keep improving. I’d love to go on a trip or two, and maybe make some magazines. Mostly I just want to keep progressing, keep having fun with it, and see what happens!
Do you have an all-time favorite image or shoot you’ve taken or been on?
I really don’t think I’d be able to pick a favorite photo. So far my favorite shoot was a little ski trip with some fellas to some islands. Sadly the waves didn’t work that day, but it was such a fun time in general – capturing some real lifestyle shots. Which honestly is one of my favorite things to capture.
Dream trip, who would you take, where would it be, and why?
I don’t really have a dream location. I’ve never been anywhere warm so that would be nice. Somewhere out in BC perhaps. Iceland is also high up on the list. I’d just really like to shoot somewhere with some crazy landscapes and epic conditions. Somewhere I can do a lot of documenting behind the scenes as well. I would really like to go with the local fellas, like Woody, Logan Landry, Scotty Sherin, and the crew…
