In its first annual Editors’ Choice Awards, Outside Magazine has named Tofino as North America’s top surf town. “The best surf town in North America is in Canada,” the magazine says. “Who knew?” The story has been picked up by all sorts of newspapers today, with the Vancouver Sun, the Globe and Mail and the CBC all running stories about it. Seems surprising at first, considering the cold and lack of point surf, but it looks like the other factors won out: clean air (check), clean water (check), good food (check), funky places to stay (check), cool local culture (check), consistent waves (check), no sharks (check), crazy scenery (check), availability of good beer (check). Apparently Haleiwa doesn’t count as part of North America, though. Or Puerto Escondido.
