Vancouver Island’s Surfrider Foundation held the 9th annual Wave hunt surf competition at China beach on Feb 25th, 2017. The fundraiser brought together people of all ages to participate in a family-friendly surf competition. With around 30 participants, each heat was mixed with both males and females with a variety of boards, from short to longboards.
The swell was small, but it didn’t stop participants from making the most of the waves. With costume masks to unique surf moves, surfers were putting on a show that all ages could enjoy.
In Surfrider fashion, this was a trash-free event. The organizers encouraged attendees to bring their own bowls and cups to enjoy the free coffee, homemade chili, and snacks.
Sunday night there was an award show in Victoria for participants with photos, beer, and pizza. Among awarding the usual 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Mens, Womens, Junior, and Masters division, special awards for ‘best bail’, ‘best albatross’, ‘best party wave’, ‘ longest ride’ and ‘best move’ were also awarded.
And the winners are….
Junior division: 1st. Finn 2nd. Rowan 3rd. Zeke 4th. Ben
